Xhosa long necked gourd

These gourds are made by Xhosa women in South Africa based on ancient traditions passed along for centuries of generations. These crafters cut river reeds or “imizi” and dry it for months in the African sun before using and then use it for weaving the baskets. We call these natural imizi-sedge.
