Javanese Basket

The manuscript ‘Tantu Pagelaran,’ explains the mythical origins of the Indonesian island, Java where we find ourselves - legend has the adventure as follows: Lord Shiva orders gods Brahma and Vishnu to fill this island with mere humans, but as Java is floating freely in the ocean, tumbling and shaking, they need to nail it down, so they bring a part of the mountain Mahameru from India. But, it tilts the island and part of it starts to break off, creating the iconic volcanoes. Shiva loves this enchantment, where the realm of mortals connects with svarga (the realm of gods), so he moves right in. Made from dried leaves from harvested corn and then spun into twine, these baskets are an exercise in using found Javanese materials.
